HKBU Launches Turing AI Orchestra as Next Milestone in Human-AI Art Co-creation

HKBU has announced the launch of the world’s first “Turing AI Orchestra”, the world's first AI ensemble, as the next milestone in its visionary plan to broaden the scope and explore potential opportunities in art co-creation by humans and AI. The announcement of the launch of the Orchestra was made at the “Human, Machine, Art, Creativity: International Symposium” on 9 August in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, at which world-renowned researchers and artists from academia and industry gathered to discuss the development of human-AI symbiotic art creativity.
Bringing the Palace Museum's Treasures to Life

Visitors in Hong Kong can explore over 900 priceless treasures from the Beijing Palace Museum at the recently opened Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM), and Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Chair Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts, has created a number of special installations that use new media techniques to interpret these historical works from the past.
HKBU Symphony Orchestra Annual Gala Concert features human-machine collaborative performance

HKBU Symphony Orchestra held its Annual Gala Concert on 14 July in the Hong Kong City Hall. Apart from showcasing HKBU student musicians’ outstanding artistic talent, this year’s Concert featured the integration of technological elements, and it presented the first human-machine collaborative performance of its kind in the world together with an AI virtual choir, AI virtual dancers and an AI media artist. The audience experienced an immersive cross-media performance, and it marked the first time in the world that an AI choir had combined with a machine-generated visual storyteller to perform interactively with a conductor and an orchestra. The AI-powered performance is one of the most significant milestones of the supporting project.
HKBU Distinguished Lecture: Seeing Through the Hype or Demystifying the Metaverse by Prof. Yike Guo

Prof Yike Guo, former Vice President (Research and Development) of HKBU, delivered a distinguished lecture titled “Seeing Through the Hype or Demystifying the Metaverse” on 22 February 2022. In this lecture Prof Guo provided a comprehensive discussion of the development of Metaverse from the perspectives of future humanity and economy, helping audiences to see through the hype of this paradigm. The lecture attracted over two hundred virtual audiences from the HKBU community.
HKBU Annual Christmas Lecture: A Gentle Introduction to AI Creation by Dr. Harry Shum

World-renowned artificial intelligence expert Dr Harry Shum, recipient of the honorary doctorate in Science from HKBU in 2020, delivered a talk on “A Gentle Introduction to AI Creation” at the HKBU Annual Christmas Lecture on 21 December 2021. In the Lecture, Dr Shum talked about the recent development in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning, which has made AI creation an exciting cross-disciplinary research area with many practical application scenarios. He then introduced three principles of AI creation and discussed the full pipeline of the AI creation process, from creating to rendering to packing.

The Quacquarelli Symonds Asia-Pacific Professional Leaders in Education (QS APPLE) 2021 Conference, hosted by HKBU and co-hosted by Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, was held virtually from 1 to 3 November with the theme “Future Rebalance: Emerging trends and workforce in the Asia Pacific”. The conference features more than 80 distinguished speakers from world-leading universities and organisations, and the programme includes keynote speeches, debates, panel discussions and case studies that reflect the opportunities and trends in education in the Asia-Pacific region.
HKBU Forum Explores Next-generation Art Technologies

HKBU held the Next-Generation Art Technologies Forum on 31 August, bringing together experts from industry, academia and government to discuss the fusion of science, technology and art, and the opportunities opened up by the new era of Art Tech. The Forum, conducted in hybrid mode, was co-organised by the Cameron Pace Group – China, a 3D technology and production company led by renowned movie director James Cameron; the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) of Switzerland; and the School of Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong.
