About
Dr Gao Meng’s research focuses on air pollution in highly polluted regions (China and India) and its interactions with health and climate. He uses a coupled meteorology-chemistry model to investigate in detail the chemical and physical processes leading to severe particulate matter and ozone pollution in Asia. He demonstrates that aerosol interactions with radiation and clouds contribute in important ways to intensification of the aerosol enhancements. He also manifests for the first time how the assimilation of PM2.5 in winter haze periods can improve model predictions and that these improved predictions can reduce significantly the uncertainties in health impacts and estimates of aerosol radiative forcing. He also found that the conditions of the ocean temperature in autumn can be effectively used to predict the severity of the Indian winter haze, which provides useful implications for pollution control at least a season in advance.
In addition to his innovative ideas, Dr Gao shows the ability to coordinate international collaborations. He plays a leading role in a large international model inter-comparison study in which 30 research groups in East Asia and beyond are looking at model performance in East Asia including regions and times with winter haze events.
