The Faculty of Social Sciences is pleased to announce that two academics of the Faculty, namely Professor Wang Donggen (Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Geography) and Dr Wendy Huang (Associate Professor of the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health), have recently secured two prestigious fellowship schemes under RGC.

Professor Wang has been selected as an awardee of the Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme (HSSPFS) 2023/24. His research project, namely “How does rail transit development induce people's daily travel behavior changes in Shenzhen?”, will investigate the link between the accessibility to rail transit and people’s daily travel behaviour.  The 12-month study will provide invaluable insights for future studies on interactions between transportation development and adapted human activities.

Apart from that, Dr Wendy Huang has been awarded the RGC Research Fellow Scheme (RFS) 2023/24 for her research project entitled “Power the Movement to Get Kids Moving: Development and Evaluation of a Report Card on Active Healthy Lifestyle for the Early Years”.  A fellowship grant of over HK$5 million will be allocated to the University for Dr Huang to conduct her research project over a duration of five years. Reviewers described Dr Huang’s RFS project as “an extremely well thought out study with important implications for Hong Kong society” that manages to address identified societal needs as well as a gap in research. The project is expected to have significant local and international impact.

The RGC’s HSSPFS and RFS are two highly competitive and significant research schemes, of which no more than 10 projects are selected for an award each year. The awards not only signify the research excellence of Professor Wang and Dr Huang, but they are also a clear indication of social scientists’ commitment to advancing knowledge and they will undoubtedly provide invaluable contributions to future research.
