Abstract:

Contact-electrification (generally known as triboelectrification) is a classic interfacial phenomenon in nature, which has been known for over 2,600 years and occurs everywhere in our daily lives, but its true scientific and technological significance has only been profoundly expanded in the last two decades through the development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Invented by Wang's group in 2012, TENGs operate on the coupling of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, converting mechanical energy into electrical power. Today, TENGs play a vitally important role in distributed energy and self-powered systems, with applications spanning the Internet of Things, AI, environmental and infrastructural monitoring, medical science, environmental science, and security. Notably, TENGs are most effective for harnessing high-entropy energy—the random, low-density, low-grade mechanical energy widely distributed in our living environment and in nature. The rapid growth of this field is reflected in the participation of over 30,000 authors from 100 countries and regions, who have collectively published more than 14,000 papers. This presentation will first focus on the fundamental scientific advances enabled by TENGs in basic chemistry through the discovery of contact-electrification (CEC) and basic physics through the across atom charge transfer, then turn to its technological and industrial impacts in energy and sensing, and finally illustrate how this emerging field can contribute to the sustainable development of humankind.
