Synopsis
The fields of Systems- and Quantative Biology aim to discover fundamental principles and address applied challenges in basic biology, medicine and biotechnology. High enthusiasm for these goals led to establishment of a Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School in 2004. I will provide a personal perspective on the evolution of different approaches in the department and comment on their impact. A striking trend in recent years has been decreasing interest in dynamical systems reasoning and increasing interest in probabilistic reasoning and machine learning. This trend is transforming quantitative biology and promises high impact on applied science goals. However, it is important to continue to learn from past successes and to insist on mechanistic understanding as a central goal of biological research.
