Distinguished Lecture: Professor Johnson Lau on planning for academic success in biomedical sciences

The Faculty of Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) hosted a distinguished lecture by Professor Johnson Lau, Co-Founder of Avalon Biomedical Management, on 19 December.
Titled “How to Plan for Academic Success in Biomedical Sciences – From Planning to Publications,” the lecture attracted nearly 50 staff and students and focused on practical approaches to career development and research planning in biomedical sciences.
The lecture opened with welcoming remarks by Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, who highlighted Professor Lau’s extensive experience in both academia and the pharmaceutical sector. He noted Professor Lau’s longstanding commitment to education and mentorship, and his ability to provide valuable guidance to researchers facing an increasingly complex research environment.
In his presentation, Professor Lau drew on his professional experience to examine key stages in academic development, including strategic research planning, building a coherent publication record, and navigating evolving research expectations. He encouraged participants to reflect on their individual research strengths and to develop a clear academic focus in an increasingly competitive field.
A central theme of the lecture was the importance of cross-disciplinary engagement. Professor Lau noted that advances in biomedical sciences are often driven by collaboration across diverse fields, particularly in areas where healthcare research overlaps with data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). He encouraged students to broaden their perspectives and remain open to learning beyond their primary discipline.
In discussing emerging trends in AI, biotechnology, and healthcare, Professor Lau emphasised the need to consider the broader social and human dimensions of scientific research. He highlighted that technological advancement should be accompanied by thoughtful consideration of its impact on society.

Professor Michael Ng, Dean of Science, facilitates an in-depth exchange on research pathways, publication strategies, and navigating the balance between academic and industry-oriented work.
The event offered a valuable platform for academic exchange and reflection, supporting ongoing dialogue between experienced research leaders and members of the University community.
