HKBU appoints Professor Lyu Aiping as Vice-President (Research and Development)

The Council of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) approved today (13 June) the appointment of Professor Lyu Aiping as Vice-President (Research and Development), with effect from 1 August 2023.

 

Professor Lyu is a world-leading scientist in aptamer-based translational medicine and drug discovery. He is currently the Chair Professor of Chinese Medicine, Dean of School of Chinese Medicine and Dr. Kennedy Y. H. Wong Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine at HKBU.

 

Professor Lyu obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine from Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1983.  He further obtained his Master’s and PhD degrees in Integrative Medicine in Pathology from the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (now known as the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, CACMS) in 1987 and 1997 respectively.

 

Since joining the University as the Dean of Chinese Medicine in 2012, Professor Lyu has provided excellent academic leadership for the ongoing development of the School of Chinese Medicine. Under his capable leadership, the School has made remarkable progress in offering solid teaching programmes, achieving strong research records and providing outstanding services to the professional field. Prior to his appointment at HKBU, Professor Lyu was the Executive Director (Legal Representative) of the Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine at CACMS.

 

Professor Lyu’s research interests focus on Chinese medicine and systems medicine, particularly the rheumatoid arthritis and its novel classification and new drug discovery.  Over the years, he has successfully secured numerous research grants and funding supported by local, regional and national funding bodies.  He has published more than 600 articles and obtained over 60 patents.  He has achieved high Google Scholar citation counts of around 24,000, with a recent Google Scholar H-index score of 76.  He is a leading figure in the standardisation of Chinese medicine diagnosis, and his distinguished accomplishments have been widely recognised by the numerous awards and prizes he has received.

 

Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, welcomes the appointment. He said, “Throughout his distinguished academic career, Professor Lyu has been at the forefront of promoting transdisciplinary research which integrates traditional Chinese medicine with other biomedical disciplines. His remarkable achievements in academic leadership and capacity building for research activities will definitely contribute to the strengthening of HKBU’s transdisciplinary research strategy.”

 

As Vice-President (Research and Development), Professor Lyu will lead the development of the University’s overall research strategy, research funding strategy, research infrastructure and postgraduate education. He will support the University in driving multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, and lead research teams in securing large extramural research projects.

 

HKBU set up a Search Committee for the Vice-President (Research and Development) in November 2022 chaired by Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU. Following two sessions of open forums for Professor Lyu to meet members of the University community, the views collected at the sessions were presented to the Council for its deliberation of the Search Committee’s recommendation.

 

After deliberation, the HKBU Council approved the Search Committee’s recommendation of Professor Lyu’s appointment at its meeting today.
