The Environment and Conservation Fund — Research and Development Projects has awarded four research initiatives led by HKBU scientists in recognition of their significance and potential impact. The recipients are Professor Gao Meng (Academy of Geography, Sociology and International Studies), Professor Matthew Lui (Department of Chemistry), Professor Wang Shancheng (Department of Physics), and Professor Zhao Jun (Department of Biology). Each project secured individual funding, averaging HK$ 500,925.

Professor Gao’s project, “Integrated Satellite and Mobile-Based Monitoring with WRF-Chem Inversion for Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) Emission Estimation in Hong Kong,” aims to build an integrated system combining satellite observations, vehicle-mounted mobile monitoring, and the WRF-Chem model for high-resolution greenhouse gas monitoring and emission estimation.

Professor Lui is collaborating with Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University on “Selective Biodegradation of Plastics with Low Recycling Value by Insects,” an insect-based biodegradation process targeting low-value plastics to offer a sustainable recycling alternative.

In Professor Wang’s awarded study, “Putrescible waste-derived building thermal management film,” he addresses Hong Kong’s high thermal-management energy use and limited putrescible waste reuse. The film, made from food and yard waste, is designed to reduce building air-conditioning energy consumption while promoting waste valorisation.

Professor Zhao’s project, “Development of Joule-heating Catalytic Technology for Hydrogen Production from Low-value Mixed Domestic Waste Plastics and Wastewater,” aims to achieve efficient waste-to-hydrogen conversion, reduce reliance on landfills, and support sustainable energy production in line with Hong Kong’s long-term carbon neutrality goals.

Together, these projects not only recognise the researchers’ impactful contributions but also underscore HKBU’s sustained commitment to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and its role in addressing global challenges.
