Patent developed by Department of Physics named in top 50 in contest

The HKBU patented invention entitled “Sapphire thin film coated substrate” has been named as one of the top 50 candidates at the 3rd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) High-Value Patent Portfolio Contest 2021. Developed by Professor Cheah Kok-wai, Dr Elizabeth K. S. Law Endowed Professor in Advanced Materials and Chair Professor of the Department of Physics, the special substrate is one of only two candidates from Hong Kong in the top 50.


Co-organised by the Guangdong Administration for Market Regulation (Guangdong Intellectual Property Administration), the Intellectual Property Department of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, the Economic Bureau of the Government of the Macao SAR and the Foshan Municipal Government, the national contest aims to strengthen the role of intellectual property in supporting innovation with the collaborative efforts of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. It is also an important initiative to promote quality development in the GBA.


This year’s contest attracted 902 participants who are enterprises, higher education institutions and scientific research bodies from around the nation, including Hong Kong and Macau. Professor Cheah’s team will compete with the other shortlisted projects for prizes including the Gold award and the Excellence award in the final, which is to be held in Foshan in November.
