Research Mingle: Decoding the Future for Health with Chinese Medicine and Science experts
The "Research Mingle" event with the School of Chinese Medicine and the Faculty of Science on January 16, 2025 (Thursday), was a resounding success! Themed “Decoding the Future for Health,” the event brought together distinguished researchers, Dr Tian Liang from the Department of Physics, Dr Zhang Lu from the Department of Computer Science, and Dr Liu Jin and Dr Wong Hoi Leong Xavier from the School of Chinese Medicine. Each shared their innovative insights into interdisciplinary approaches to health, inspiring all attendees with their groundbreaking work and fostering new avenues for collaboration.
The event commenced with a series of engaging presentations from the four distinguished speakers, each offering unique insights and expertise. Dr Tian shared his perspective on advanced medical imaging technologies, including AI-driven diagnostic tools that could enhance the accuracy and speed of disease detection. His discussion emphasised the possibilities for these innovations to bridge theoretical physics with practical medical applications.
Dr Liu followed with a reflective exploration of integrating traditional Chinese medicine with modern scientific methodologies. He presented compelling case studies that illustrated how ancient practices can be validated through contemporary research, shedding light on the challenges of harmonising these two distinct paradigms while revealing exciting avenues for future health interventions.
Continuing the presentations, Dr Zhang introduced his research on computational models that predict patient responses based on various factors, including genetics and lifestyle. His work underscored the significant role of data science in personalising healthcare, illustrating how algorithms can optimise treatment plans for individual patients, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes.
Dr Wong concluded the presentations with a measured discourse on the importance of evidence-based practices in herbal medicine. He advocated for rigorous scientific validation of traditional remedies, suggesting that such efforts not only enhance credibility but also foster greater acceptance of these treatments within mainstream healthcare.
The event underscored the importance of interdisciplinary research and facilitated insightful discussions on the integration of traditional practices with contemporary technologies. This engaging dialogue prompted numerous attendees to remain afterward, allowing for a thorough exploration of these themes and the exchange of valuable insights on potential collaborations. Special thanks to Mr Yang Xin, a PhD student from the School of Chinese Medicine, for his excellent role as MC.
