Research Mingle: Showcasing Rising Stars behind the breakthroughs
On April 24, 2025, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) successfully hosted its Research Mingle event under the theme “Rising Stars Behind the Breakthroughs.” This event proudly highlighted four of our emerging Rising Stars, whose extraordinary research journeys, remarkable successes, and compelling stories in their respective fields captivated peers, students, and collaborators alike.
The event featured an inspiring panel discussion moderated by Professor Zhong Bu, Dean of the School of Communication, who expertly guided the session. The distinguished speakers included Professor Chen Ting from the Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance, Professor Gao Meng from the Academy of Geography, Sociology and International Studies, Professor Shi Jingyuan from the Department of Interactive Media, and Professor Xavier Wong from the School of Chinese Medicine. Each shared their unique journeys as Rising Stars in their respective fields, offering a glimpse into their paths to prominence. Their thought-provoking contributions shed light on profound topics that resonated deeply with the audience.
Professor Chen underscored the paramount importance of conducting research firmly anchored in societal realities and rigorous data analysis. She candidly addressed the challenges inherent in managing multiple projects, as most of them may not bear fruit eventually. She emphasised that balancing workloads and seizing research opportunities are crucial, as overcommitting can significantly impede responsiveness and collaboration.
In a similar vein, Professor Gao, specializing in chemical engineering and air pollution, embodies resilience and success through his proactive approach, thoughtful decision-making, and strong professional network. By navigating the competitive landscape of funding opportunities, he persistently pursued numerous grants. His ability to maintain a positive outlook amidst challenges underscores his resilience. He advises young researchers to remain proactive, cultivate supportive networks, and make thoughtful decisions to achieve success in their fields.
Following this, Professor Shi's journey in health and environmental communication highlights resilience, leveraging emergent technology for social good and overcoming PhD challenges. Her significant contributions have earned her a role as an expert advisor on the World Health Organization (WHO) steering committee. She motivates students to explore beyond their expertise, collaborate with diverse scholars, and focus on research with deep social impact, aligning with the proactive spirit shared by her peers.
Professor Wong likewise embodies perseverance in his academic endeavours, valuing it above talent or effort. Now exploring ageing and metabolic disorders, he emphasises curiosity and research integrity, promoting mentorship and local networks to foster a successful scientific career. These stories collectively highlight resilience and adaptability, reflecting the shared ethos of these distinguished academics.
We sincerely thank Professor Zhong for his masterful moderation and PhD student Ms Doris Wang for her exemplary hosting. This event created a vibrant forum where scholars and PhD students could immerse themselves in the wisdom of our Rising Stars, learning invaluable lessons in resilience, innovation, and perseverance.
