On the 12 and 15 of September, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) hosted its two‑day Research Mixer, a warm and collegial gathering where 12 HKBU scholars openly shared their experiences with the wider research community. The event fostered connection, trust, and mutual learning—creating space for candid conversations about proposal development, reviewer expectations, and practical approaches to strengthening applications. Colleagues from across disciplines met to explore common challenges and spark new, collaborative ideas, further enriching HKBU’s vibrant and supportive research ecosystem.
At the event, Professor Liu Jiming, Associate Vice-President (Research Development), and Professor Christy Cheung, Director of the Research Office, facilitated discussion with other facilitators and shared key insights with the community. Professor Liu encouraged colleagues to consult successful peers and senior mentors to calibrate their groundwork, scope, and novelty to align with emerging research trends in the field. He also remarked, “Persistence is important – just keep on doing it.” Echoing Professor Liu’s advice, Professor Cheung also urged junior faculty to keep trying, seek guidance from colleagues, prioritise clear and reviewer-friendly writing, and start early to enable rigorous polishing.
The two-day event featured dynamic, small-group discussions led by facilitators including Professor Andrej Fech, Professor Noriaki Hoshino and Professor Wang Donggen from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Li Yupeng from the School of Communication; Professor Aik Wei‑shen and Professor Qiu Jianwen from the Faculty of Science; Professor Zeng Jicheng, Professor Wang Liyao and Professor Zhang Jian from the School of Business; and Professor Xavier Wong from School of Chinese Medicine.
Mr Ivan Lau, Senior Manager of the Research Office, also provided an overview and panel-specific data for participants' reference. Attendees described the strategies as highly useful, engaging, and readily actionable, noting that the sessions fostered meaningful, cross-disciplinary exchange.
