Professor Cheung Yiu-ming, Professor of Department of Computer Science, has been elected as an AAAS Fellow by American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) under the section on General Interest in Science and Engineering for his distinguished contributions to the field of cluster analysis and visual computing, particularly for theoretical modeling and implementations towards new applications of artificial intelligence.
The AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society with the members from more than 91 countries around the world, and is the publisher of the well-known scientific journal Science. AAAS Fellows are a distinguished cadre of scientists, engineers and innovators who have been recognized for their achievements across disciplines, from research, teaching, and technology, to administration in academia, industry and government, to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public. Each year, the AAAS Council elects members whose “efforts on behalf of the advancement of science, or its applications, are scientifically or socially distinguished.” The 2021 Class of AAAS Fellows consists of 564 international distinguished leaders in science, engineering and innovation, including Yann LeCun, who is 2018 Turing Award Winner. The full list of 2021 Fellows can be found here; this year only three newly elected fellows are from China: two from Mainland China, and one from Hong Kong.
