The Institute of Creativity (IoC) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) was honoured to host its first-ever Nature Masterclasses workshop, marking an important step in fostering dialogue between the HKBU research community and globally-renowned publishers. This event, part of the IoC Editors’ Series, brought senior editors from Nature Communications and Nature Physics to engage directly with HKBU scholars.

Dr Nele Hug, Senior Editor at Nature Communications, and Dr Bart Verberck, Senior Consulting Editor at Nature Physics, generously shared their editorial insights with a diverse group of HKBU researchers, including established academics, early-career researchers, and doctoral students. The workshop provided valuable practical guidance on preparing manuscripts, navigating the peer-review process, and understanding the qualities – such as clarity, precision, and effective communication of scientific impact that contribute to successful publication in high-impact journals.

Through interactive exercises and editorial simulations, participants refined their scientific storytelling and gained a deeper understanding of the expectations of high-impact journals. Editors also provided personalised feedback on pre-submitted abstracts, offering direct guidance from Nature Portfolio experts.

This workshop, made possible by the generous support of the Hung Hin Shiu Charitable Foundation, reinforces HKBU's dedication to supporting high-quality research. This first-time hosting of the Nature Masterclasses enables the IoC to further support the professional development of our research community and strengthen HKBU’s engagement with the international research community.
