First crossover Research Mingle with BUS & COMM: Technologies and Communication for Social Good
The first crossover "Research Mingle" event with the two Schools, the School of Business and the School of Communication, on November 19, 2024 (Tuesday) was a great success! The Event, themed “Technologies and Communication for Social Good,” converged trailblazing researchers Dr Charles Feng and Dr Jolie Shi from the Department of Interactive Media, alongside Dr Shirley Li and Dr Wang Wenqian from the Department of Management, Marketing, and Information Systems, sharing their innovative approaches to promoting social good through diverse and interdisciplinary research, inspiring all present with their pioneering work.
Dr Charles Feng captivated the audience with his two projects to enhance public well-being through innovative strategies to address misinformation and optimise information exposure. His network meta-analysis aims to identify the most effective strategies for correcting health misinformation, thereby protecting public health.
Building on enhancing well-being, Dr Shirley Li shared using language and digital tools like memes to enhance marketing effectiveness and contribute to social good. Her research underscored digital communication’s role in shaping consumer perceptions and driving positive social outcomes, highlighting innovative methodologies in addressing societal challenges.
Continuing the exploration of novel strategies, Dr Jolie Shi introduced a human-machine communication framework involving AI interfaces and system explanations to promote mental health. Dr Shi emphasised the potential of integrating communication and explainable AI (XAI) to foster user trust and understanding, ultimately contributing to social good.
Dr Wang Wenqian enriched the event with a thought-provoking discussion on the need for balanced blockchain governance. He highlighted blockchain's transformative potential across industries including insurance, automotive, logistics, trade finance, and healthcare. Dr Wang advocated for sustainable development and long-term growth for blockchain consortia.
The diverse topics and interdisciplinary approaches demonstrated the wide-reaching impact of their work. The enthusiastic attendees eagerly engaged in dynamic discussions during the Q&A session and stayed behind after the event to discuss different types of language, masspersonal communication, the use of blockchain in organisations, and more. Special thanks to Dr Zhu Yuner from the School of Communication for being an exceptional MC and ensuring the event ran smoothly.
The event successfully showcased the innovative research of the four speakers, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a vibrant research community.
