Professor Michael Ng, Dean of the School of Science and Technology and Chair Professor in Mathematics and Data Science, has been awarded the Second Prize of the Hunan Provincial Natural Science Award (湖南省自然科學獎二等獎) for his project "張量低秩稀疏優化的理論與方法及其在圖像恢復中的應用".
The key outputs of the award-winning project include: constructing a sparse optimisation model with non-convex fidelity terms and applying it to image impulse noise removal and deblurring problems, which established the point-wise constant property of the local minimisers of this model, thereby further expanding the theoretical system of non-convex sparse optimisation. Additionally, the project constructed a class of non-convex approximation functions for tubal rank minimisation and established a perturbation theory for non-local methods, significantly enriching and developing robust tensor recovery methods.
The Hunan Provincial Natural Science Award is one of the categories under the Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Awards, established by the Hunan Provincial People’s Government. It aims to recognise organisations and individuals that have elucidated natural phenomena, characteristics, and laws in basic and applied basic research, and have achieved significant scientific discoveries recognised by the natural science community both within China and internationally.
