Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), in collaboration with the Global Sustainable Development Research Institute and supported by several professional associations in environmental management in the Chinese Mainland, hosted the Hong Kong Green Energy Week Forum yesterday (20 May) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The forum brought together Government officials, industry leaders, energy experts, and scholars to explore the development of hydrogen energy and strategies for advancing urban green and low-carbon transformation.
The Hong Kong Green Energy Week, scheduled to be staged in Hong Kong for the first time in 2027, held the inauguration ceremony for its Secretariat in Hong Kong at the forum yesterday. The Asian Energy Studies Centre under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at HKBU has officially assumed the role of the Secretariat of Hong Kong Green Energy Week (Hong Kong). This underscores HKBU’s leadership in advancing green energy development, and its unique role in driving multilateral collaboration across industry, academia and research, to proactively support the Nation, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and the public in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality.

The forum was one of the parallel sessions of the “International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026”, which was hosted from 18 to 20 May by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the Government of the HKSAR at HKCEC. It is also an academic event organised in celebration of the 70th anniversary of HKBU. The forum has received support from the Center for International Energy and Environment Strategy Studies of the Renmin University of China, the China Association for Water and Electricity Quality Management, the China International Culture Exchange Center, the China Petroleum Enterprise Association, and the Global Forum on Sustainable Energy.
The opening ceremony of the forum was officiated by Miss Diane Wong Shuk-han, Acting Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the Government of the HKSAR; Professor Xu Qinhua, Vice Chair of the Expert Committee of the China Petroleum Enterprise Association and Professor of the Renmin University of China; Professor Alfred Sit Wing-hang, Founding Chairman of the Global Sustainable Development Research Institute and Senior Advisor to the President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; and Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School of HKBU.
In his welcome remarks, Professor Lyu Aiping said: “The global energy system is accelerating its transition toward decarbonisation, digitalisation, and diversification. New energy sources such as hydrogen have become a vital bridge connecting traditional and future energy development. Through this event, we hope to foster transdisciplinary dialogue and facilitate the exchange of achievements across disciplines such as social sciences, environmental sciences, and biological sciences. It also aims to further promote in-depth collaboration among the Government, industry, academia, and community organisations, thereby contributing Hong Kong’s strength to sustainable development at both the national and global levels.”
Professor Alfred Sit Wing-hang said: “I look forward to promoting collaborative efforts between the Secretariat and the Global Sustainable Development Research Institute, thereby further strengthening Hong Kong Green Energy Week as an internationally influential platform for green energy exchange. We have also inaugurated the Women's Committee of Hong Kong Green Energy Week. Women are not only participants in the green energy transition, but also key innovators and leaders.”
Miss Diane Wong stated: “Hong Kong has evolved from a spectator into a contributor in the global hydrogen transition. Through a strong ‘Government, Industry, Academia, Research, and Application’ ecosystem, we are translating high-level strategies into tangible outcomes. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest congratulations on the establishment of the Hong Kong Secretariat of Hong Kong Green Energy Week and the Women’s Committee of Hong Kong Green Energy Week. These important milestones will undoubtedly strengthen coordination, enhance inclusiveness, and inject new momentum into our green energy development efforts.”
Professor Xu Qinhua extended her heartfelt congratulations on the forum. She noted that under China’s blueprint for building an energy powerhouse, Hong Kong—as a special administrative region—and its universities, represented by HKBU, play a significant and unique role.
The official launch of the Secretariat of the Hong Kong Green Energy Week (Hong Kong) was witnessed by Miss Diane Wong Shuk-han, Professor Xu Qinhua, Professor Alfred Sit Wing-hang, and Professor Lyu Aiping, together with Professor Daniel Lai, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of HKBU; Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited; Mr Wang Gang, Chairman of Shenzhen Energy Environment Co Ltd; Mr Chen Heyi, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Recycling Chamber of Commerce; and Professor Gao Meng, Professor of the Department of Geography at HKBU and Convenor of the Hong Kong Secretariat at the inauguration ceremony.
