Professor Cheung Yiu-ming elected as a Member of the European Academy of Engineering
Professor Cheung Yiu-ming, Chair Professor in Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), has been elected as a Member of the European Academy of Engineering (EAE). The honour recognises his distinguished achievements and contributions to artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in machine learning and visual computing.
“I am deeply honoured to be elected a Member of the European Academy of Engineering,” Professor Cheung said. “This recognition belongs equally to my colleagues, collaborators, and students, whose insights and dedication have supported our research. I am also grateful to the University for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. I look forward to developing more robust and trustworthy AI technologies and translating our research into solutions that benefit society.”
His election further strengthens the University's position as an emerging hub for advanced AI research, placing HKBU scholars among a select group of leading international engineers recognised by the EAE, which was established in Sweden in 1992 to advance engineering science and international collaboration.

Professor Cheung, who joined the University in 2001, is also a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the British Computer Society (BCS). He currently serves as the Dean of the Institute for Research and Continuing Education (IRACE) and Associate Director of the Institute of Computational and Theoretical Studies. He has published more than 300 publications in top-tier journals and conferences, e.g., IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI), IEEE Transactions on Image Processing (TIP), NeurIPS, CVPR, and ICML.
Reflecting his international research impact, he has been ranked among the world’s top 2% (actual ranking 0.28%) most-cited scientists in AI and image processing. He also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence.
His research encompasses data science, pattern recognition, multi-objective optimisation, and information security. In 2023, Professor Cheung received a prestigious RGC Senior Research Fellowship for his project developing advanced facial reenactment detection methods. This research utilises visual information to combat deepfake videos and enhance speaker verification security, demonstrating the practical, high-impact societal relevance of his computational scholarship.
