Understanding cities through people: Professor Wang Donggen

BACK

Professor Wang Donggen (Chair Professor in Geography, Academy of Geography, Sociology and International Studies), a recipient of key grant schemes from the General Research Fund and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, is dedicated to investigating the complex intersections of travel behaviour, the built environment, and socio-spatial segregation.

Following his recent achievement in receiving the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work, Professor Wang gives us a glimpse into his rewarding academic journey. Over the course of his career, he has attained the heights of his profession, such as co-founding a leading transport geography journal, Travel Behavior and Society, where he has since served as co-editor-in-chief, and being listed among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists.

He underscores the relationship between a place and human behaviours, which shapes the story of a city. “Understanding urban planning starts with understanding people”, says Professor Wang, as he takes us through his journey.
