During the lecture, Professor Pevzner addressed the critical bioinformatics challenges in achieving complete genomics/metagenomics faced by researchers. He presented innovative approaches that offer potential solutions, propelling researchers closer to the ultimate goal of sequencing complete genomes and metagenomes. Furthermore, he highlighted the practical applications of these approaches in the metagenomics-based search for novel antibiotics, demonstrating their potential for revolutionising drug discovery.

The lecture concluded with a lively Q&A session, providing attendees with a valuable opportunity to interact with Professor Pevzner and explore the topics further. The audience expressed appreciation for the knowledge shared and newfound inspiration for bioinformatics research.

Professor Pevzner is the Ronald R. Taylor Chair and Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at University of California, San Diego. He was named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor in 2006. Professor Pevzner holds the prestigious titles of a Fellow of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS). He co-developed the “Bioinformatics” and “Data Structure and Algorithms” online specialisations on Coursera with over a million enrolments in the last decade.
