On January 19, 2024 (Friday), the HKBU Research Office organised "Research Mingle – Crossing Over with the Department of Computer Science", bringing together accomplished researchers from diverse disciplines. This gathering provided an excellent platform for intellectual exchanges and collaborations, fostering a joyful environment for scholars to engage in thought-provoking discussions.

The event featured three distinguished speakers from the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Science, who shared their expertise in different areas. Professor Chen Li, Associate Head (Research) and Professor, emphasised the importance of prioritising human well-being in AI applications from the users’ perspective. She introduced her team and the Positive Intelligence Lab, which fostered collaboration projects.

Dr Chen Jie, an Assistant Professor of the Department, captivated the audience with his presentation on motion science and virtual production, showcasing the applications of AI and multimedia technology at HKBU Motion Capture and Visualization Laboratory. The audience was deeply impressed and inspired by the appealing video clips and the first AI Micro-Movie, which demonstrated the use of ChatGPT and AI.

Dr Zhang Lu, another Assistant Professor of the Department, shared his expertise in computational genomics and human health. He focused on human gut microbiota and shared experimental stories happening at the HKBU Bioinformatics Lab, highlighting the significance of this field in developing effective health management systems.

The speakers’ presentations not only inspired the audience but also encouraged interdisciplinary connections among researchers. Their experiences exemplified the notion that fruitful collaborations often arise from unexpected encounters, and interdisciplinary partnerships can lead to groundbreaking research outcomes. Mr Li Yifan, a current HKBU PhD student in Management Information Systems, skilfully steered the event and captivated the audience from start to finish. This inaugural cross-over Research Mingle event proved to be a remarkable occasion for HKBU researchers to explore the possibilities of integrating computer science with their respective fields.

The Research Office remains committed to upholding and fostering an inclusive and collaborative research community, empowering researchers to establish meaningful connections, bridging disciplinary boundaries, and fostering synergy between brilliant minds.
