首個與文學院聯乘的“Research Mingle” 活動

On March 7, 2024 (Thursday), the “Research Mingle – Crossing over with the Faculty of Arts” event was successfully held, in which we are honoured to have two Faculty representatives as the speakers. Building on their research expertise in humanities and cultures, they are incorporating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in their interdisciplinary research work and studies. 

The first speaker Dr Chen I-Ling, Assistant Professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and Associate Director of the Centre for Chinese Cultural Heritage, captivated the audience with her insightful presentation about her research on the digitalisation of East Asian medical literature. She shared her collaborative research work with Professor Lo Ming Tung, Head of the Department and Director of the Centre, shedding light on the latest advancements in her field. 

Another distinguished speaker was Dr Jonathan Harrington, Assistant Professor of the Department of English Language and Literature. He provided his unique perspective on board game research, from board games’ histories and regionality to their application in society. He stated a range of perspectives on his board game research, with the stress on the role and significance of AI in the research field, arousing participants’ interest in getting to know more about his work.

Both presentations mentioned AI applications, which sparked further exchanges on AI’s impact in the Q&A session. The discussions covered AI’s contribution to solving translation issues and the efficiency of an AI literature database, as well as more specific questions based on their presentations.

“We all should think about how to promote interdisciplinary studies,” Professor Stuart Christie, Executive Associate Dean of the Faculty, concluded the event with his insights about promoting interdisciplinary studies and research within and beyond the University and expressed appreciation to all contributing parties.

A standout feature of this event was the professional simultaneous interpretation services provided by Enter-Link, run by HKBU alumni from the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies and the Department of Computer Science. Dr Janice Pan, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty, also offered meticulous interpretation using their equipment during the event, contributing to an international conference-like environment for the participants.

The Research Mingle event not only offered valuable knowledge and insights but also provided an excellent opportunity for researchers to mingle and network in a relaxing but collaborative environment with nice refreshments and beverages. The event was smoothly coordinated by the MC, Miss Zhu Linqing, a dedicated PhD student of the Faculty. 

The Research Office at HKBU remains committed to fostering an inclusive and collaborative research community. Through events like the Research Mingle, researchers are empowered to establish meaningful connections, bridge disciplinary boundaries, and cultivate synergy between brilliant minds.
