Professor Sihem Amer-Yahia talks about “Commodifying Data Exploration” in a Distinguished Lecture.

HKBU Department of Computer Science organised a Distinguished Lecture titled “Commodifying Data Exploration” on 3 April 2023 featuring Professor Sihem Amer-Yahia, a Silver Medal French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) Research Director and Deputy Director of the Lab of Informatics of Grenoble, Université Grenoble Alpes. The lecture focused on the challenges of Explanatory Data Analysis (EDA) and how to make it easily deployable for users.

EDA is a critical process that enables users to find meaningful insights in data. In the lecture, Professor Sihem discussed some strategies to make EDA more user-friendly, including stepwise and full-guidance approaches. She also explored the key questions in EDA, such as what users are looking for and how they can find meaningful insights effectively. She also addressed the challenges of storing learnt pathways through data or regenerating them when needed.

Prior to joining the CNRA, she was Principal Scientist at Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), Senior Scientist at Yahoo! Research, and Member of the technical staff at AT&T Labs. She currently leads the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative for the database community and serves as PC chair for SIGMOD 2023 and Vice President of the VLDB Endowment.
