Communication and film researchers win top paper awards

Two scholars and a PhD student from the School of Communication and Film recently won multiple international awards for their research papers.
 
Dr Timothy Fung, Associate Professor of the Department of Communication Studies, won two Top Faculty Paper awards in the Communicating Science, Health, Environment, and Risk Division at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) 2021 virtual conference. Dr Fung is the lead author of the two award-winning papers, which are entitled “Integrating psychometric paradigm of risk and issue attention cycle: A study of risk information in news coverage of avian and swine influenza” and “Examining antecedents to accuracy- and defense-motivated information insufficiency in the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Dr Celine Song, Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism, received the Outstanding Paper award from the academic journal Internet Research at the Internet Research Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence 2021 . Her co-authored paper “Viral misinformation and echo chambers: the diffusion of rumors about genetically modified organisms on social media” focused on the social media platform Weibo.

Meanwhile, Minos-Athanasios Karyotakis, a PhD candidate from the School of Communication and Film, also earned two awards at the AEJMC. He was the first runner-up for the Top Student Paper Award in the Cultural and Critical Studies Division for his paper “Disinformation and Weaponized Communication: The Spread of Ideological Hate about the Macedonian Name in Greece”, and the second runner-up in the Media Ethics Division for the paper “A Need for Change: The Perceived Power of Media and Journalists in Greece”.
