Computer Scientists Delivered Inspiring Talks at the 23rd Departmental Postgraduate Research Symposium

The 23rd Postgraduate Research Symposium hosted by the Department of Computer Science was successfully held via Zoom meeting on 19 June 2020.

The Symposium is an important event for the department to take stock of the students’ research progress, enhance their performance, and allow exchange of ideas among professors and students. This year, two inspiring talks were delivered at the Symposium, inviting constructive interaction among some 100 audiences.

The first talk titled “COVID-Net: Open Source Deep Learning Initiative for COVID-19 Detection from Chest Radiography” was delivered by Dr. Alexander Wong from University of Waterloo, Canada. In his talk, Dr. Wong introduced COVID-Net, a global deep learning initiative for COVID-19 detection and risk stratification from chest radiography that is open source and available to the general public.

The second talk was delivered by Prof. Jiming Liu from the Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University, on “How Computer Science and AI Can Help Save the World from Deadly Infectious Diseases”. In his talk he shared his stories in the journey of translating exciting computer science research into socially impactful solutions in infectious disease control and prevention, e.g., in combating the outbreaks of malaria, swine flu, and COVID-19.

Apart from the invited talks, the Symposium also provided a platform for 26 postgraduate students to present their research work on topics covering Database Management, Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision, Information System, Data Mining, Health Informatics, Complex System, Autonomy-oriented Computing, and Networking and Optimization. Students with outstanding performance were presented Best Research Performance Award (Mr. Jiaxin JIANG and Mr. Kejing YIN) and Best Presentation Award (Ms. Wanling CAI, Mr. Lei LI and Mr. Ce ZHANG).
