HKBU hosts international doctoral symposium to analyse social problems from global perspectives

The “International Doctoral Symposium on Global Perspectives on Social Problems, Policy, and Practice” hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) kicked off on 8 January, attracting over 150 participants. Held from 8 to 12 January, the symposium brings together outstanding young scholars from around the world to explore the impact of globalisation on social issues and policies.

Leading scholars and doctoral students from five QS top 100 universities, namely the University of Chicago, the University of British Columbia, the University of Michigan, Seoul National University, and Nanyang Technological University, presented their research findings at the event. They discussed potential solutions to a wide range of pressing social issues stemming from urbanisation, migration, and rapid changes in the economy and technology.

Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said in his welcome address: “Today’s symposium is a testament to our partnerships with global universities and a showcase of Hong Kong as an important international education hub. We appreciate the expertise and talents that our speakers and doctoral students from different parts of the world bring to this symposium, and we are eager to see the networking and collaboration among scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students of different regions through this symposium.

“We also treasure cross-cultural learning and the exchange of ideas that can push the frontiers of knowledge. I am confident that this symposium will open the door to more partnerships on various aspects with the participating universities in the future,” he added.

The opening ceremony saw the attendance of Honorary Professors from HKBU’s Faculty of Social Science, such as Mr Alfred Sit, Senior Advisor to the Vice-President and Chancellor at HKBU and former Secretary for Innovation and Technology, and Professor Lui Tai-lok, Adjunct Research Chair Professor of the Education University of Hong Kong.
