We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Cheung Yiu Ming, Chair Professor in Artificial Intelligence, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, for his prestigious IAPR Fellow Award, to acknowledge his distinguished contributions to the fields of cluster analysis and visual computing, as well as their applications.

Introduced in 1994, the esteemed biennial IAPR Fellow Award was presented to not more than 0.25% of the total IAPR membership. This year, there are 21 newly elected IAPR Fellows worldwide in total, in which Professor Cheung is the only one from Hong Kong. The selection process evaluates the person’s service to IAPR and scientific contributions to pattern recognition. Currently, IAPR has nearly 50 member societies around the world and its biennial International Joint Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR conference) attracts thousands of researchers.

In addition to this latest accolade, Professor Cheung is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and was named a Senior Research Fellow by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2023. Since 2019, he has been ranked among the World’s Top 1% Most-cited Scientists in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing by Stanford University for six consecutive years.

Once again, we congratulate Professor Cheung on his remarkable achievements and his continued dedication to advancing the field of pattern recognition.
