Two scholars named awardees of RGC Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme
Professor Clara Ho, Head and Professor of the Department of History, and Dr Celine Song, Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism, were selected as awardees of the Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme 2021/22 under the Research Grants Council (RGC).
Professor Ho’s research project, namely “Getting Older, Doing Worse: Aging-provoked Unhappiness as Seen in Self-narratives of Qing China”, is built on another ongoing piece of research conducted by her and supported by the General Research Fund of the RGC. She will investigate first-person, gender-inclusive human voices and their experiences of ageing in Qing China (1644-1912). The study offers an opportunity to explore the wisdom of ancestors and rethink the issues associated with ageing populations from a historical perspective.
Dr Song’s funded project is entitled “Networked Framing in the Age of Hybrid Media: Legacy Media Coverage of and Social Media Conversations about Climate Change in the US, UK, and China”. The study expands on her previous work, which received the 2019-20 Fulbright-RGC Hong Kong Senior Research Scholar Award, and it combines advanced data mining techniques and traditional social science approaches to examine how the discursive fields across various types of media and content sources have come to shape public understanding of climate issues.
The Scheme grants supporting funds to outstanding investigators in humanities and social sciences disciplines, and it also provides relief from teaching and administrative duties, enabling awardees to focus on research and writing. No more than ten awards are granted each year.
