Award ceremony
Professor Christy Cheung (right) received the RGC Senior Research Fellow on her research project on social media’s cybermobbing from Ms Michelle Li, the Permanent Secretary for Education (left), at the UGC Secretariat’s Office.

Professor Christy Cheung, Professor of the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences, was awarded the honour of RGC Senior Research Fellow in 2020/21 by the Research Grants Council (RGC). Her research project on social media’s cybermobbing received a fellowship grant of around HK$7.8 million over a period of 60 months.

The RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme honours academics from universities funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC) for their distinguished research achievements and significant contributions to the higher education sector.

Leveraging on her research team’s expertise in scenario-based research, fake news detection and social media analytics, Professor Cheung has proposed the socio-technical perspective to study the collective nature and mechanism of cybermobbing on social media, and evaluate technology-based prevention and intervention strategies. As this is a nascent field internationally, the results from the project will pioneer scientific inquiries in the largely uncharted research territories with far-reaching impacts.

Six other HKBU researchers were also recognised by various UGC and RGC funding schemes:

Dr Rashmi Supriya, Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health
