Mr Charles Li Talks on Developing a More Economically Inclusive Financial Market

Mr Charles Li, Founder and Chairman of Micro Connect, former Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX), delivered a distinguished lecture titled “Developing a More Economically Inclusive Financial Market” on 24 May 2022.

 

From fintech to digital assets, finance is being transformed across different parts of the world. In this lecture, Mr. Li discussed how and why the global financial markets are moving from a system of centralized trust to one that is predicated on distributed transparency. He also demonstrated how China, with the world’s most digitized payment infrastructure and cashless economy, is well position to transform its financial system to better serve its real economy. He closed the lecture by sharing his latest endeavor in leveraging digital innovation to make global capital more accessible to China’s micro and small business. 

 

Co-organised by the Institute of Creativity (IoC) and the Research Office, the lecture was part of the HKBU Distinguished Lecture Series 2022 that aims to bring leading researchers from the field of interdisciplinary research to talk about current grand challenges.


About the speaker 
Mr Li is Founder and Chairman of Micro Connect. He was the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (“HKEX”) from January 2010 to December 2020.  He orchestrated some of the most significant strategic initiatives in HKEX's history, including the acquisition of the London Metal Exchange in 2012, the launch of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect cross-border trading scheme in 2014, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect in 2016, Bond Connect in 2017, and the Listing Reforms in 2018.  Prior to joining HKEX, he served as Chairman of JP Morgan China from 2003 to 2009 and the President of Merrill Lynch from 1999 to 2003.
