A paper published two years ago by a research team led by HKBU biologist Prof Qiu Jianwen has been recently selected as an Editor’s Choice article in the deep-sea research journal Deep-Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers.
The paper titled “A new species of deep-sea mussel (Bivalvia: Mytilidae: Gigantidas) from the South China Sea: morphology, phylogenetic position, and gill-associated microbes” (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr.2019.03.001) describes a new species of deep-sea mussel (Gigantidas haimaensis n. sp.) collected from a cold seep on the northwestern slope of the South China Sea. It is the first new species of deep-sea mussel described from Chinese waters and in the entire South China Sea. The research is supported by a National Key R&D Program from the Ministry of Science and Technology, China.
